Choosing a Band Name
Coming up with a great Name for your Band can be tricky - some bands
never find a good name (I've been in a few bands like this "Bob says
Gibbon", "Liquid Boomerang" and "Pipeline" being
a small selection!)
Not only do you have to come up with a name that suits your band, genre,
style, etc. It also needs to be catchy and memorable. Another hurdle is
finding a name everyone in the band likes! On top of all these problems
you have to avoid names that have already been registered by other artists.
If you are going to name your solo act after your name, you might want
to reconsider if you are called Elton John!
If you get stuck thinking of a good, original name then try our Random Band
Name Generator.
Once you've got a few Band Names I recommend looking at the following
site to make sure no one else is using it
Also check the local and national press for any bands using the name
who may not have registered it yet. You may find another local unsigned
band has the same name, don't be tempted to use it, you never know they
might get signed.
If someone is already using the name you've thought of, then my advice
is don't use it. You'll be wasting your time if your fans gets to know
you with that name and you end up having to change it later down the line.
You might consider adding some words to the name you have, or altering
the spelling. As an example one of my current bands was called Casino,
a quick search for this turns up loads of bands so we changed it to Casinogroove
- it's not the worlds best name, but it's original and kinda describes
our type of music.
Of utmost importance nowadays is your bands website address, so you may
want to check that your chosen name is available as a domain name - my
personal favourite site to check this is http://www.centralnic.com/ferret/
Once you've settled on your name - register it, rehearse, record a tune
and upload it to this site!
Also nowadays you're fans will expect you to have a website see our info on finding a website host
